History: Zoë Alleyne Washburne was born on February 15th, 2484 on a ship, giving her no homeworld allegiance. She served under Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds for two and a half years for the Independent (Browncoat) Army in the Unification War against the Alliance. Her official rank was Corporal at the time of the Battle of Serenity Valley.

Nothing is known about her life before she joined the platoon, just that she shares Mal’s opinion that the Alliance wasn’t for everyone and the fact that they forced the Outer Planets to join against their will was reprehensible. She and her superior officer were the only two survivors of the seven week-long battle and were held captive by the Alliance forces in a camp for war crimes. Soon after, they were released because the Alliance wanted to wash their hands of the entire rebellion.

After the war, she joined a group of terrorists called "Dust Devils", who continued to fight against the Alliance's Peacekeepers, one of the few open shows of contempt Zoë allows to peek through for the establishment. She stayed with them until Malcolm recruited her as his second-in-command for his ship, The Serenity. She agreed readily, taking up the position she'd held during the war, but not without a level of skepticism that Mal only tolerated from his loyal friend and former subordinate.

Almost a year after Hoban "Wash" Washburne joined the crew as the pilot of Serenity, he and Zoë got married, despite the fact that she disliked him when they first met. Their marriage was a happy, nearly stable thing throughout their journey with the rest of the crew—so long as Wash's jealousy over Zoë's relationship with Mal was kept in check. In fact, most of Zoë’s relationship with Malcolm Reynolds is based upon mutual trust, loyalty and respect that comes with fighting and nearly dying with one another. Their time in the war gave them the sort of bond that closely resembles that of close blood ties. They trust each other almost implicitly, so much so that it makes Wash insanely jealous. This issue was resolved by the time Wash and Mal went out on a mission together and were held captive by a notorious mobster who the Serenity crew crossed on a previous encounter.

Once River and Simon Tam joined the Serenity as passengers, her life and those of the rest of the crew was turned upside, making their life of crime as smugglers and runners that much harder. Not only did they have to begin avoiding the people they’d angered before but the Alliance as well. Bringing both Zoë and Mal nearly full circle since the Battle of Serenity Valley.
